Hawaii Area Literature Distribution Center (HALDC) |
HALDC |
Does it seem as though at every meeting you attend someone refers to a piece of Al-Anon literature or their favorite Al-Anon book? And then you look around and wonder what they are talking about and how you get a copy?
Our Al-Anon literature is a wonderful resource for our recovery and to use in our meetings. It is our documented recovery. Many Al-Anon members have a personal copy of every piece of literature and of every book Al-Anon has ever published.
What a wonderful experience for newcomers to go to their first meeting and see all the literature displayed. You can see their eyes jump from one title to the next. Then there it is: the one that speaks to them. It is something for you to tell them about as you tell them about Al-Anon. When you refer to your daily meditation book -- whether it is "One Day At A Time" or "Courage To Change" -- you will almost always see that their ears perk up and they want to know about that book.
When you go to your meeting, check to see if it carries a good stock of Al-Anon literature. If not, at the next business meeting bring up the topic and suggest that the group start to purchase books and literature as the group treasury permits.
All of our literature is available for every Al-Anon Family Group to purchase for its members at our Hawaii Area Literature Distribution Center, commonly referred to as "HALDC." To order literature, you need the Al-Anon Literature order form. The forms and the catalogs of all the literature are available from HALDC, or your Group Representative (GR) can pick them up at the next District Meeting.
To complete the form, simply note how many of that piece of literature that you want. Remember when order five or more of the books, you can deduct fifty cents from the cost of each one -- you can even mix the titles! If you buy 25 or more copies of the same book, you get an additional savings.
Most groups will order a variety and try to keep at least two of every book for their display table. For the literature, start with a few pieces and gradually add to your display. Many groups carry a full complement of the books and literature, so if you are looking for a place to pick up items for your collection, ask your GR what groups carry the books and pay them a visit.
There is almost always a complete display of our Al-Anon Literature at the various Conventions and Area Assemblies. We also sell the Al-Anon books at the Hawaii Convention.

How did all this get started?
Very much like many other things in our lives, it started with a need, an inspiring member visiting from Kansas and a few of Hawaii Al-Anon members who were willing to spend a little extra time and energy.
Why should we use our Literature Distribution Center?
HALDC was started to help get the Al-Anon Literature to our groups and fellowship in a more timely manner. Think of it this way: Hawaii has approximately 70 Al-Anon Groups. If every one of them sent its order directly to the World Service Office (WSO), it would be a much larger undertaking to process 70 small orders than one large order. The WSO has requested that if there is a Distribution Center in your Area that you use it. This helps WSO keep personnel costs down.
Where do we send our orders?
Send completed order forms along with a check to:
HALDC
98-939 Moanalua Rd.
Aiea, Hawaii 96701
How long will we have to wait for our order?
The HALDC mailbox is checked three times a week, and orders are filled as close to those dates as possible. Neighbor Island groups usually receive their orders within 1 week to 10 days. Oahu groups can arrange for delivery or pick-up.
HALDC Vacation Schedule:
Does HALDC take walk-in or phone-in orders?
Due to the arrangement with St. Timothy's Church, we cannot do walk-in service unless prior arrangements are made. Phone-in orders are taken; phone Brigida at 674-0828.
If we call in an order or mail an order and my group meets on Oahu, must we still pay the 7% shipping and handling charge?
Yes! HALDC pays 15% to Al-Anon Family Groups Headquarters to have our literature mailed to us from the office in Virginia. And yet, the only charge to groups is 7%.
(Editors Note: A savings if you use HALDC!)
Who or what is HALDC?
The Hawaii Area Literature Distribution Center is an arm of Hawaii Area Al-Anon Family Groups. The inventory is stored at St. Timothy's Church in Aiea. HALDC pays rent for use of the space as Al-Anon is self-supporting as it says in our Traditions. Orders are filled and mailed, and deposits are made.
Does HALDC take Visa or MasterCard and/or sell on consignment?
No to both questions.
